LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: LOOKING AHEAD TO 2024

The impending 2024 legislative season holds promising prospects for an array of legislative activities, and we are eagerly anticipating the developments on the horizon. Taking a moment to shed light on the ongoing initiatives and those looming on the horizon, here's the latest update:

Michigan:

A notable development in Michigan is the introduction of the Michigan Death with Dignity Act (SB681), currently under the review of the Committee on Health Policy. Aligned with other concurrent Death with Dignity bills in various states, SB681 marks the first instance of such legislation in Michigan since 2017.

Wisconsin:

Lawmakers in Wisconsin have presented a draft legislation that may empower qualified terminally ill residents to request medical aid-in-dying (MAID) medications. This initiative follows the 2022 session's unsuccessful Death with Dignity bill. For more details, refer to our recent news post.

New York:

Entering its eighth year of consideration, New York's Medical Aid in Dying Act (A995/S2445) has seen notable progress during the 2023 legislative session. The success of the Legislator Storytelling Series has prompted an increased number of elected officials to publicly advocate for bill movement, and this momentum is expected to carry into January.

Massachusetts:

On October 20, the Joint Committee on Public Health conducted a public hearing for The Massachusetts End of Life Options Act (S1331/H2246). The hearing, featuring prominent advocates and Death with Dignity’s National Political Strategist, Geoff Sugerman, marked the initial step in advancing the bill out of the committee. The bill is slated to continue into the 2024 session.

2024 Carry-Over Bills:

In seven states, Death with Dignity bills introduced in 2023 will seamlessly carry over into 2024 without requiring formal reintroduction. This continuity extends beyond Massachusetts and New York to encompass advocacy efforts in Minnesota, Delaware, Iowa, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
