Volodymyr Zelensky showed American politicians what patriotism looks like

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a speech to Congress on Wednesday that garnered mixed reactions. While some were displeased with his appearance, seeing him as a war-time commander-in-chief during his visit to the White House and Capitol Hill, our readers were overwhelmingly pleased with his speech. Many even compared him favorably to iconic wartime leaders like Winston Churchill. However, some unfavorable comparisons were made, but only concerning specific American politicians in relation to Zelensky, possibly explaining the focus on his fashion choices.

To the editor: Zelensky demonstrated what a true hero looks like to the world. Despite being a short, slightly chubby comedian, he embodies courage, perseverance, and humility. Unlike many leaders, he refrained from clinging to indefinite power, displaying a commitment to democratic values. If American leaders followed his example, the ideals of the American dream could flourish.

Moreover, when listening to Zelensky's speech, one couldn't help but reflect on what might have happened in Afghanistan if President Ashraf Ghani had shown similar determination and unity with his citizens instead of fleeing. Zelensky's bravery and resolve serve as a stark contrast to those who instigated the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, highlighting the true meaning of patriotism.

Zelensky's visit on the winter solstice, a time of least daylight, felt appropriate as his speech touched on triumph over tyranny and a victorious new year. Facing challenges from a bolstered Russia-China alliance alongside other countries, Zelensky's unwavering energy against evil inspires us to remain resilient and support Ukraine.

In a more global context, Zelensky's speech evoked memories of Winston Churchill's appeal to Congress in 1941. Just as Churchill sought America's help to repel Adolf Hitler's assault on his country, Ukraine needs financial and military support to counter Vladimir Putin's aggression. It's disheartening that some politicians who applauded Zelensky may have previously acquitted our former president of inappropriate political behavior, revealing a moral inconsistency and disgrace.

Overall, Zelensky's speech resonated with readers, and he serves as a model for courage, determination, and leadership. It is essential for us to continue supporting Ukraine as it faces challenging times ahead, guided by the light of democratic principles.
